Do you have the discipline to be a free spirit?
Gabrielle Roth, creator of 5 Rhythms dance, would ask ‘Do you have the discipline to be a free spirit?’. I come back to that question time and time again.
When something fundamental changes in our life – a new relationship, new home, different job – it calls us out on anything that’s unhealed in our lives. Thresholds like these mean we need to make a commitment to a new direction, a different life. They are times of upheaval and change and, if we’re listening to our soul whispers, they are golden opportunities for soul growth.
Take the terror of commitment and change as a gift. It’s a sign that we need to take a fresh look at whatever no longer works for us, and a calling to step into the mystery of doing things differently.
It’s not necessary for you to know every step of the way forward. All that’s needed is a leaning in to the wisdom of your deepest self. A listening and a deep trust in your own knowing, and in your own decision-making.
How do you listen to your wisdom?
How can you begin to trust your own heart?
Firstly, befriend and call home the parts of you that are afraid. Be present with those parts that are feeling anxious. Watch out for dependencies on another’s opinion – whether a friend, partner or someone on social media.
Go for regular walks in nature, to find peace and a sense of groundedness.
Connect to your creativity – let your feelings find form in dance, writing and art.
We are all free spirits. Whatever your life looks like, you are a free spirit when you tend to the calling of your soul for growth.
Being committed to that unfolding of your life sometimes requires commitment to a new direction, which always means letting something go. But however scary that might feel right now, freedom lies around the next corner.
